What Is a Late Applicant?

A late applicant is an employee or dependent who does not enroll in your group benefits plan within the required 31-day enrollment window — whether it’s after being hired, finishing a probation period, or experiencing a life event.

If enrollment is delayed, the insurer may require evidence of insurability (a medical questionnaire or health tests). Coverage can be limited, delayed, or declined altogether.


When to Act

For New Hires

  • Submit the enrollment form within 31 days of the hire date, or

  • Within 31 days after completing the probation period (often three months)

For Life Events

Notify your insurer within 31 days of any of the following:

  • Marriage or common-law relationship

  • Birth or adoption of a child

  • Divorce or separation
